Week 1 Wide Receiver & Tight End Target Report and Observations

Printer-friendly version

RB Breakdown | WR & TE Breakdown

If you’ve never checked out a target report, it can provide a lot of insight into how players are being used in their respective offenses.  While week-to-week variability is certain, it’s still a nice tool to use to help with your lineup decisions and waiver pickups.  Feel free to contact us on Twitter ( and ), via ,  or just throw your questions into the comments section below for any clarifications or help with your lineup.

Heroes

  • Steve Smith showed that he still has plenty left in the tank after having a monster week.  With Cam Newton targeting him 11 times, this is a trend that will probably continue throughout the season.
  • A lot of people were scared to draft Aaron Hernandez after he disappeared in the second half of 2010.  He racked up 10 targets and put together a 100+ yard game (and a TD).  Johnny’s prediction that he could function as a WR2 in the Pats offense is living true.
  • Desean Jackson’s 12 targets were a bit surprising, and the fact that Maclin only had 3 is a great sign for DJax owners.
  • Reggie Wayne will continue to be the workhorse in the Colts offense, with or without Peyton Manning.
  • Deion Branch was another Patriot that racked up the targets with 9.  It’s tough to count on them throwing the ball 48 times a week, so don’t get too comfortable with Branch in your lineup just yet.
  • Devery Henderson came out of nowhere with 9 targets and a 100-yard game.  Don’t get used to this, as Henderson has always been a guy that will flash a big game out of nowhere.  He’ll probably disappear once Lance Moore is healthy.
  • Any concerns of Julio Jones stealing Roddy White’s thunder have been somewhat alleviated.  White had 13 targets (tied for the NFL lead) to Jones’ 6.

Zeros

  • Dwayne Bowe racked up a solid 8 targets, but only managed 2 catches.  The Chiefs’ offense as a whole has looked anemic in the preseason, and now week 1.  He’s going to get looks, but he’ll probably struggle to be consistent with a much tougher schedule in 2011.
  • Antonio Brown, madly overhyped in the preseason, had a ridiculous 9 targets but only 2 catches.  Sanders is the better of the two and Brown will be nonexistent as the season wears on.
  • Lance Kendricks only managed 1 catch on his 5 targets.  Rookie tight ends typically struggle to be relevant week in and week out.  Look for waiver wire options if you drafted him to be your TE1.
  • The fact that Percy Harvin only had 4 targets is ludicrous.  The Vikings have to find ways to get him the ball.  If Donovan McNabb can only manage 39 passing yards a game, it’s going to be a long season for Harvin owners.
  • Lee Evans managed a whopping 0 catches on his 4 targets.  This guy just continues to burn fantasy owners year after year. He’s better left on your bench.
  • Marcedes Lewis only managed a couple of catches on 3 targets.  He’s not a big target hog as it is.  For those in PPR leagues, there are probably more consistent options sitting on your waiver wire.  Fred Davis and Ben Watson have both emerged in their respective offenses.
  • After being highly touted as a tight end with a lot of upside in the offseason, Jared Cook caught 1 ball on 2 targets.  It’s not time to dump him, but hopefully you have a better option until Cook can live up to his billing.
