Julius Echter Hefe-Weiss

Julius Echter Hefe-Weiss

Okay, I'm a filthy pirate hooker for Hefe-Weiss in the Summer months. Love that refreshing wheat-hoppy goodness with a touch of smoke. It just feels like a BBQ. I can almost picture Snoop & Dr. Dre pulling down some ho's tube top as old folks dance at Will Smith's family reunion. Anyway, the BEER! Julius Echter Hefe-Weiss is brewed by the famed Würzburger Hofbräu brewery. The Bavarian purity laws are ridiculously strict, and the results are the tastiest, purest brews that will ever touch your lips.

Flying Dog Ale: In-Heat Wheat

The first time I tried this classic Hefeweizen (out of Frederick, MD) at a BBQ two years ago, I was blown away. A classic summer wheat beer, with a touch of oaky smoke. Perfect with ribs and steak, and especially with smoked brisket or trout. This is "Me Time" beer. Close your eyes on your backyard deck, take a sip, and imagine the crackling campfire and relax...even if you have to face the grind the next day. A truly "transportable" beer.

June Beer of the Month: Big Bay Brewing's Wavehopper

I have to give salute to Big Bay Brewing Company out of Shorewood, WI--a mere 15 miles from my humble abode. Newly established in late 2010, I recently stumbled upon their "Wavehopper" and was very impressed with it. Don't let the name fool you. The "Wavehopper" isn't an extremely hoppy beer--which as an IPA lover I was expecting. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised with this Kölsch styled-beer. A subtle taste that sits on the edge of your tongue as you drink, it's a perfect beer for your summer parties--not too filling, a unique flavor, and very easy to drink.

What I did on Summer Vacation...Hint: It Rhymes with DRINK BEER

Roger Goodell & Dee Smith gave me the go ahead to cease fantasy football operations for a week, so during that time I spent some time with my sweet "better half" in the rolling green hills of Vermont. During that time, I hiked, ate some quality grub, and of course, enjoyed some tasty craft beer.

May Beer Pinup of the Month: Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy

The weather is warming up, time to get the deck chairs out of storage, clear the cobwebs off the patio umbrella, and fire up the grille. Much like the crisp, refreshing evenings in May, Leinenkugel's "Summer Shandy" is just the ticket to preview the good things in store for the summer. A crisp lager with a touch of lemon, gives this summertime beer an easy drinkability. Not too sweet and not too tart, it's a real crowd pleaser, and you won't have to feel compelled to fruit up your man cooler with "hard lemonade" and suspect "iced Teas." Leave that garbage to the kids with no taste buds.

April Beer Pinup of the Month (Saranac Black Forest)

We, and by we, I mean me and my p.i.c., Forbes, loves us some frothy libations. Suds, brew, barley water, whatever you want to call it, we enjoy a quality beer. This month? I play homage to my wife's family up in the Adirondacks of New York State, and make a case for Saranac Black Forest. A dark, slightly sweet Bavarian style dark beer. It sports a frothy head, and a burnt caramel color and sweet flavor that lends itself well to Summer BBQ, and even grilled lobster and scallops. Enjoy.
